Tedy Bruschi full name Tedy Lacap Bruschi, is a former professional American football player.

Tedy attended Roseville High School in Roseville, California, where he lettered twice in football and was a two-year captain, earning all-conference, all-northern California and all-metro honors as a defensive tackle. He also earned a letter in wrestling and two letters in track and field, competing in the shot put and discus.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in communications at the University of Arizona. He played for the Arizona Wildcats football team from 1991 to 1995. He was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American in 1994 and 1995, and won the 1995 Morris Trophy as the Pacific-10 Conference’s best defensive lineman.

He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 1996 NFL Draft, and played his entire professional career with the Patriots. Bruschi won three Super Bowls and was a two-time All-Pro selection.

Tedy Bruschi played in five of the Patriots’ Super Bowl appearances and in 189 career regular season games (and 22 playoff games) during his 13-year career (1996-2008), all with the Patriots. A defensive team captain for seven seasons, Bruschi helped lead the Pats to nine playoffs, eight division championships, five conference titles and three Super Bowl crowns (XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX). He also helped guide the Patriots to the first undefeated 16-0 regular season record in NFL history in 2007.

A 2004 Pro Bowl selection, Bruschi finished his career with 1,134 tackles, 30.5 sacks and 12 interceptions. He is the only player in NFL history to return four consecutive interceptions for touchdowns.

He joined ESPN as a NFL analyst in August 2009, one week after announcing his retirement from pro football. The former New England Patriots linebacker appears on NFL Live, SportsCenter, ESPN Radio and more. In addition, Bruschi contributes to ESPN’s Super Bowl and NFL Draft coverage. In 2013, the Patriots named Bruschi to their Hall of Fame, capping his long, outstanding history with the franchise.

Tedy Bruschi has suffered another stroke, Tedy’s Team, a stroke-awareness charity, announced in a statement on July 5, 2019.

“Yesterday afternoon, Tedy had a stroke, known as a TIA [transient ischemic attack]. He recognized his warning signs immediately: arm weakness, face drooping and speech difficulties. Tedy is recovering well, and would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff at Sturdy Memorial Hospital for all they have done. Tedy and his family thank you for your ongoing encouragement, and kindly ask for privacy at this time.”

Bruschi suffered a mild stroke in February 2005, just weeks after he and the Patriots had defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX, but he recovered and played in nine games during the 2005 NFL season.

Bruschi founded Tedy’s Team in 2005 to raise awareness of stroke and heart disease (after his first stroke, doctors discovered that Bruschi had a hole in his heart that contributed to the stroke).
