Sarah Thomas is an American football official, currently working for the National Football League (NFL). She was the first woman to officiate a major college football game, the first to officiate a bowl game and the first to officiate in a Big Ten stadium. Thomas was hired as the first full-time female official in NFL history, on April 8, 2015. During the 2020 NFL season, she was in the officiating crew headed by referee Shawn Hochuli. She started her officiating career in 1996 when she attended a meeting of the Gulf Coast Football Officials Association. She served her first varsity high school game in 1999. When Thomas was asked about the challenges associated with being a football official, Thomas said that there have “not been any challenges” being a female in football and stated, “Everybody has been very professional, and they look at me just like another official”,

In 2013, she was among the 21 finalists in contention for a permanent NFL officiating position. On April 8, 2015, the NFL announced that Thomas would become the first permanent female official in NFL history. She made her National Football League (NFL) regular-season debut in a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium, on September 13, 2015, as part of Pete Morelli’s crew as the line judge.

On December 24, 2016, she broke her wrist in a mid-game collision on the sideline of a Vikings-Packers game. After being examined, Thomas returned and finished the game with a broken wrist. In 2017, she moved to the down judge position. The change in the position name from head linesman coincided with the move in order to use a gender-neutral term. Thomas is the first woman to earn an on-field assignment for a playoff game. She was named to the crew for the game between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers on January 13, 2019.
