Ranjit Chowdhry was an Indian actor, known for his roles in television and theatre. He was featured in two episodes of The Office, as Vikram, a telemarketer who worked with Michael, and was briefly hired for The Michael Scott Paper Company. For his role as Rocky in Deepa Mehta’s 2002 film Bollywood/Hollywood, he was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role at the 23rd Genie Awards. He had another notable role recently in 2006 in the film Last Holiday starring Queen Latifah.
He was raised in a family with a theatre background, and therefore he received his early education at Campion School, Mumbai, and started his acting career. He made his film debut in Basu Chatterjee’s Khatta Meetha, and thereafter he played prominent parts in Bollywood comedy classics such as Basu Chatterjee’s Baton Baton Mein (1979) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Khubsoorat (1980). He later went to live in the United States in the early 1980s. He wrote and also was cast as an actor in the screenplay Sam & Me which was directed by Deepa Mehta and the play managed to win an honorable mention at Cannes in 1991.

He died on April 15, 2020, in Mumbai. The news of his death was shared by his half-sister who is also a theatre artist known as Raell Padamsee on her Instagram account, with a picture of the deceased that read, “Actor, writer, maverick… we will miss you.”
Raell also announced that the funeral will be held today while the prayer meet will happen once the lockdown gets over. She wrote, “For all those who knew Ranjit, the funeral will be held tomorrow and a gathering to celebrate his life and share his stories on May 5. With love, Raell.”
His step-father, Alyque Padamsee, in his memoir – A Double Life: My Exciting Years in Theatre and Advertising, mentioned, “Ranjit, my foster son, has always been a delightful sprite of a human being. An impish person, both in size and personality, he’s quick-witted and charming, and has carved out an impressive international film career for himself as Ranjit Chowdhry.”

He got a ruptured ulcer in the intestine which happened on April 14, 2020. They operated on him but he succumbed to his death in hospital.
