Rance Allen was an American Bishop, Minister, and gospel musician, and the founder and leader of the Rance Allen Group. He was the senior pastor of the New Bethel Church Of God In Christ in Toledo, Ohio, since its establishment in July 1985. In November 2011, he was elevated to the office of Bishop in the Church of God in Christ, for the Michigan Northwestern Harvest Jurisdiction.

Allen was born in 1948 in Monroe, Michigan. At the age of five he began his preaching ministry and by age nine was preaching throughout Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. He was licensed to preach at age 12. In 1978, he was ordained an Elder by the late Bishop John Seth Bailey and subsequently served 6-1/2 years as Associate Pastor of Holiness Temple Church of God In Christ (COGIC) in Monroe, MI.

He served many years on the board of the Neighborhood Improvement Foundation of Toledo, Inc., a community organization whose mission was dedicated to improving inner-city environments. In recognition of his dedicated years in ministry, the Urban Bible Institute of Detroit bestowed upon him an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 1995.

In September 2011, Bishop Allen was elevated to the office of Jurisdictional Prelate of Michigan Northwestern Harvest in Detroit, succeeding the late Bishop Alfred Knight, Jr. and was consecrated on November 7, 2011, during the 104th Holy Convocation in St. Louis, Missouri.

Bishop Allen and his brothers Thomas and Steve Allen formed The Rance Allen Group in 1969. He became known as the main lead vocalist and the leader of the group. He also was a songwriter, guitarist and keyboard player. The group recorded more than 20 albums over five decades for labels that included Stax Records. The Allens fused traditional gospel music with rock and soul, touring and performing with artists including Andrae Crouch, Marvin Winans, Bebe and Cece Winans, the Clark Sisters, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Tye Tribbett, Shirley Caesar, Donnie McClurkin, and Mary McLaurine Glover. The Rance Allen Group won two Stellar Awards in 2012 and was nominated for five Grammy Awards in the soul gospel category. The group was inducted into Detroit’s International Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 1998.

Rudolph Jr., who is the Adjutant General of the Church of God in Christ. The statement read: “God, who is omnipotent and omniscient, has summoned His Servant, Bishop Rance Lee Allen, to eternal rest. Bishop Allen was a world-renowned gospel artist and affectionately known as the ‘Father of Contemporary Gospel Music.’ Bishop Allen’s unique vocal ministry was an indispensable sound within the Church Of God In Christ and Christendom. His gift transcended the boundaries of musical genre as he remained a sought after personality called to perform on global venues.

“During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic resulting in local and state restrictions on public gatherings to achieve social distancing, the family will hold a private memorial service for this servant. When the restrictions are lifted, a date will be set for a Jurisdictional Memorial Service that will appropriately recognize the godly life and notable achievements of Bishop Rance Allen.

“During this time of uncertainty, we request the continued prayers as well as acts of emotional and spiritual support for the family. It is with great honor that the National Adjutancy will assist the family during this most difficult time.”
