Maurice Hill Biography – Maurice Hill Wiki
Maurice Hill is the suspect who shot at officers during a standoff that lasted nearly eight hours in Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia shooting broke out on August 14, 2019, when a Narcotics Strike Force unit went to serve a search warrant. As they moved toward the kitchen area, a man fired multiple rounds, forcing some officers to escape through the window. The man then barricaded himself in the home and fired shots at officers. Six officers were wounded in the ordeal, and the suspect was arrested shortly after midnight.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney used the shooting press conference to highlight gun control issues. He said, “Our officers need help…. They need help with gun control. They need help with keeping weapons out of these people’s hands. This government, federal and state’s level, doesn’t want to do anything about getting these guns off the streets and getting them out of the hands of criminals.”
Journalist Alexandria Hoff wrote on Twitter that some people at the scene were taunting police officers during the standoff. She wrote, “I mentioned this at 10 and since I was harassed during that live shot, I’ll mention it here too. A major moment of disappointment this evening was watching a crowd of people taunt police officers, laughing and yelling at them in the midst of the gunfire.”
She added: “I should add – 98% of people here on scene were respectful and concerned. That moment was just such a startling thing to see in the middle of something so chaotic.”

Maurice Hill Surrender
The Philadelphia police commissioner, Richard Ross Jr., credited local attorney Shaka Johnson with helping authorities bring the standoff to an end. Johnson told CBS that he is Hill’s former attorney. He said the suspect called him Wednesday evening while he was watching the drama unfold on television. The suspect said he needed help, Johnson said. “He did not want this to end violently,” Johnson told the station, adding, “I told him you got to surrender now, you know, in short you have to surrender.” Johnson engaged the suspect in conversation, Ross said, but police ultimately used tear gas to force the suspect out of the house.

At one point during the incident, the police commissioner said, the suspect was in contact with his girlfriend via video chat. Negotiators then used information about the girlfriend and the suspect’s newborn as leverage to “appeal to him and his sense of reasoning,” Ross said.
