Paul Sherwen full name William Paul Sherwen, was an English professional racing cyclist and a cycling broadcaster. He was born on 7 June 1956 in Widnes, Lancashire, England.
As a professional cyclist, Sherwen was a two-time British National Cycling champion in 1986 and 1987, participated in the Tour de France seven times and raced in all major European tours and one-day classics.
Paul Sherwen was a cycling analyst for NBC Sports Group’s cycling programming on NBC and NBC Sports Network, including the Tour de France, Tour of California and USA ProCycling Challenge.
Sherwen was one of the most well-known voices in cycling, providing analysis for NBC Sports Group’s coverage of various events including the Tour de France. 2018 marks Sherwen’s 40th Tour de France (33 as a commentator, 7 as a competitor).
Sherwen served as a cycling play-by-play announcer during NBC Olympics’ coverage of the 2016 Olympic Games – marking his fourth assignment with NBC Olympics. Previously, he served as a cycling analyst at the 2012 London Olympics, 2008 Beijing Olympics, and 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Prior to joining NBC Sports Network, Sherwen worked as a cycling commentator for ABC Sports’ and ESPN’s coverage of the Tour de France from 1991 to 2000, and served as a cycling analyst for the NBC production of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

He died on 2 December 2018 at his home in Kampala, Uganda aged 62. Following the news of his death, SBS released a statement that read, “He and Phil Liggett brought the Tour de France alive for us and into our loungerooms late at night, every July. The dynamic duo taught us about the beauty of cycling and we are grateful.
“How could we have fallen in love with this sport without their passion and their ability to set up the drama?
“A former cyclist himself in the 1980s, and a co-commentator with Phil Ligget for 33 years, Paul had forgotten more than we could ever know about cycling and arguably, life.”
Cycling commentator and former professional rider, Phil Liggett, wrote on Twitter, “I went to bed in Africa with a heavy heart last night feeling sadness like never before. My team mate for 33 years was no longer with me. Your hundreds of messages showed how well @PaulSherwen was loved. Let’s think of Katherine and his children with love just now.”
