Navid Afkari Biography – Navid Afkari Wiki
Navid Afkari was an Iranian wrestler. He was tortured and sentenced to death by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran for an alleged murder that occurred during the 2018 Iranian protests. His brothers Vahid Afkari and Habib Afkari were sentenced to 54 and 27 years in prison in the same case, respectively.
His death sentence sparked global outrage and calls to overturn his execution. U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted: “Hearing that Iran is looking to execute a great and popular wrestling star, 27-year-old Navid Afkarai, whose sole act was an anti-government demonstration on the streets. They were protesting the “country’s worsening economic situation and inflation.” To the leaders of Iran, I would greatly appreciate if you would spare this young man’s life, and not execute him. Thank you!”
UFC President Dana White said in a video posted to Instagram: “(Afkari) went to a peaceful protest in Iran and he’s going to be executed for that. It was brought to my attention. This guy is, first of all he’s a human being; number two: he’s one of us. He could be any of my fighters. The only thing I thought to do was to call the President and see if he could help this man. He said, ‘Let us look into it. Let me talk to the administration and see if there is something we can do to save his life.’ So the President tweeted (a plea to the Iranian government). I would just like to say that I, too, respectfully and humbly ask the government officials in Iran to please not execute this man and spare his life.”
U.S. State Department spokeswoman, Morgan Ortagus, tweeted: “We join the world in outrage at the Iranian regime’s death sentence for Navid Afkari, who was tortured into giving a false confession after participating in peaceful protests in 2018. The regime also tortured his two brothers and sentenced them to decades in prison. Let them go!”
International Organisation to Preserve Human Rights (IOPHR) tweeted: “IOPHR demands Iranian regime to stop the unlawful execution of #NavidAfkari for participating anti-government protests.”
UN Watch tweeted: “The Islamic Republic of Iran just confirmed the death sentence of wrestling champion Navid Afkari for participating in 2018 protests against the regime. The Islamic Republic of Iran is an elected member of the U.N. Commission on Criminal Justice. Why, (António Guterres)? To rally world pressure on Iran’s regime to prevent the execution of Navid Afkari, we call on all celebrities with a global following, especially sports stars, to please speak out. Time is of the essence.”
