Michael A. Usan is an attorney and judge on the 17th Judicial Circuit Court of Broward County, Florida. Usan was appointed to the bench by former Governor Charlie Crist in 2010 to replace retired Judge Linda L. Vitale. He won the election to the seat in 2012 and was re-elected in 2018.

As a judge, he’s known as a smart, well-prepared and no-nonsense jurist. He has presided over more than 100 felony trials and resolved thousands of criminal cases, he said in a 2018 interview with the Sun Sentinel.

Usan started his legal career in 1987 as an attorney in the Air Force. He joined the Broward State Attorney’s Office after leaving the Air Force in 1992. He was in private practice — primarily criminal defense law — until he was appointed judge.

Usan was admitted to the Florida Bar in December 1987; the United States Court of Military Appeals, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in 1988; U.S. District Court of Southern District of Florida in 1995; Minnesota in 1990; and U.S. Supreme Court in 1994.

Education

Usan earned a degree in political science and Russian Studies from the University of Minnesota in 1984. He got his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1987.
