Max Merritt (born Maxwell James Merritt) was a New Zealand-born singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is best known for his 1975 hit Slippin’ Away, with his band Max Merritt and The Meteors.

Max was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1941. He moved to Sydney in 1964 and formed Max Merritt and the Meteors. According to The Canberra Times, his first TV appearance in Australia was on Johnny O’Keefe’s Song Sing Sing show when he performed Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah. In February 1966, Max Merritt and the Meteors were the support act for The Rolling Stones. The band had hits with Try A Little Tenderness and Western Union Man before Merritt’s original song Slipping Away took the band to new heights. The song reached No.2 in Australia and No.5 in New Zealand.

During the 60s, Merritt moved to the UK before settling in Los Angeles in 1977 and continued to tour Australia and New Zealand regularly until 2007. He was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2008 alongside Dragon, Russell Morris and The Triffids.

Merritt died on 24 September 2020, at the age of 79 in a Los Angeles hospital after being diagnosed with Goodpasture Syndrome, a rare serious auto-immune disease that attacks the lungs and kidneys. Merritt had been on a dialysis machine three days a week since he fell ill in 2007, according to his long time friend and Personal Manager, Wal Bishop. Bishop said in a statement released on Friday, 25 September 2020, “He really put up a great fight and will be sadly missed by all that knew and loved him.”
