Maria Fassi Biography – Maria Fassi Wiki

Maria Fassi is a Mexican professional golfer who plays on the LPGA Tour. Born in Pachuca, Mexico, Maria started playing at the age of 7. She is a three-time Mexican Women’s Amateur winner and 2015 Spirit International Amateur winner.

She played college golf at the University of Arkansas where she was 2018 WGCA First-Team All-American, SEC Golfer of the Year and ANNIKA Award winner, in addition to winning the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Championship individual title and receiving the Honda Sports Award.

On joining the University of Arkansas, Maria told Golf Digest: “Gaby Lopez of Mexico, who now plays on the LPGA Tour, was at the University of Arkansas. I knew Gaby and her family, and they convinced me to visit. Flying into northwest Arkansas, it was farmland as far as I could see. I told my mom, “Um, no, I need something else.” [Laughs.] I couldn’t imagine spending four years there. Then we turned into the entrance at Blessings Golf Club [home course for the Arkansas men’s and women’s teams], and I thought, Wow. Maybe I’ll have to reconsider. I met with [coach] Shauna Taylor, and I was sold.”

Shauna Taylor, the coach of the Razorback’s Women’s Golf Program, said: “Convincing Maria to become a Razorback would not have been possible without the help of Gaby Lopez. They have been friends for quite some time and the great experience Gaby had as a student-athlete at The University of Arkansas definitely proved helpful in the recruiting process with Maria. I have watched Maria compete and play over the past few years and she possesses many of the intangibles that you just can’t teach. She has had many great competitive experiences across the world and when you couple that with her great length you have a recipe for success. Maria is a special athlete and I know she will leave her mark on program moving forward.”

In April 2019, she finished runner-up at the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Maria turned pro in May 2019, making her professional debut at the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open.

On making her professional debut at the U.S. women’s open in June 2019, she said: “The site—the Country Club of Charleston in South Carolina—is where I had my moment during the 2013 U.S. Amateur. My family came out to cheer me on. I nearly missed the cut, but I played the weekend in four under and finished tied for 12th. I finally realized my dream.”
