Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean (Maeve Kennedy Mckean) is the daughter of Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, an attorney and a former lieutenant governor of Maryland, and David Townsend, an attorney, and professor.
Maeve most recently has been serving as the executive director of the Georgetown University Global Health Initiative. She previously served as an associate research professor at the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Public Health and helped launch CUNY’s Center for Immigrant, Refugee and Global Health, according to her Georgetown bio.
She also served within the Obama administration as the first-ever senior advisor for human rights within the State Department’s global AIDS program and at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Global Affairs leading the work on vulnerable population human rights policy issues, including women and children’s health, in particular issues of violence, and LGBT health.
McKean graduated from Georgetown University with a joint J.D. degree from Georgetown Law and a master of science degree in international negotiations and conflict resolution from the Walsh School of Foreign Service in 2009.

Maeve Kennedy McKean and her 8-year-old son Gideon died on April 2, 2020, following a canoeing accident in the Chesapeake Bay. They had paddled out to retrieve a ball and were unable to paddle back to shore.
Addressing the incident, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean’s husband, David McKean said in a Facebook post, “Gideon and Maeve were playing kickball by the small, shallow cove behind the house, and one of them kicked the ball into the water. The cove is protected, with much calmer wind and water than in the greater Chesapeake. They got into a canoe, intending simply to retrieve the ball, and somehow got pushed by wind or tide into the open bay. About 30 minutes later they were spotted by an onlooker from land, who saw them far out from shore, and called the police. After that last sighting, they were not seen again.”
