Luke Letlow (born Luke Joshua Letlow) was a member-elect of the U.S. House of Representatives from Louisiana’s 5th district. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Louisiana’s 5th congressional district in 2020 but died before taking office. Prior to his election to Congress, Letlow served as chief of staff to former Representative Ralph Abraham.
He previously served as the District Director for U.S. Congressman Bobby Jindal, as well as the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for Governor Bobby Jindal. He was also once employed by QEP Energy in Shreveport as the Director of Government and Community Affairs.
Letlow attended Start Elementary and Junior High, Ouachita Christian High School, and received a B.S. from Louisiana Tech University in 2003.

In August 2020, Letlow praised his wife in a Facebook post. He wrote: “Yesterday, I watched with pride and awe as my wife interviewed as a semi-finalist for the ULM Presidential search. She let her passion to better this region and her bold vision for ULM guide her as she interviewed with grace and strength. Anyone who truly knows my wife knows that her determination is a force to be reckoned with, her vision is inspiring, and her passion is contagious. Julia, I am so proud of you for stepping forward, and I know there are many others who feel the same way. While this may not have been your time, you are destined for greatness. And it will be the highest honor of my life to be by your side through it all.”

Luke Letlow Death
Luke Letlow passed away on December 29, 2020, at the age of 41, at Ochsner-LSU Health Shreveport due to complications from COVID-19. He was admitted into a Monroe hospital on December 19 after testing positive for the coronavirus and was transferred to Ochsner-LSU Health on Tuesday, December 22, and placed in intensive care. Andrew Bautsch, Representative for Congressman-elect Luke Letlow, said in a statement, “The family appreciates the numerous prayers and support over the past days but asks for privacy during this difficult and unexpected time. A statement from the family along with funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement: “Congressman-elect Letlow was a ninth-generation Louisianan who fought passionately for his point of view and dedicated his life to public service. As the House grieves Congressman-elect Letlow’s passing, our sorrow is compounded by the grief of so many other families who have also suffered lives cut short by this terrible virus. May it be a comfort to Luke Letlow’s wife Julia Barnhill Letlow and their children Jeremiah and Jacqueline that so many mourn their loss and are praying for them at this sad time.”

John Bel Edwards paid tribute to Letlow via Twitter: “It is with heavy hearts that @FirstLadyOfLA and I offer our condolences to Congressman-elect Luke Letlow’s family on his passing after a battle with COVID-19. Congressman-elect Letlow felt a calling from a young age to serve the people of his home state, working behind the scenes for former Governor Bobby Jindal and serving as chief of staff to Congressman Ralph Abraham, who he was recently elected to succeed.
“COVID-19 has taken Congressman-elect Letlow from us far too soon. I am heartbroken that he will not be able to serve our people as a U.S. Representative, but I am even more devastated for his loving family. I hope all of the people of Louisiana will join Donna and me in praying for Congressman-elect Letlow’s family, especially his wife Julia and their two children, his many friends, and the people of the 5th Congressional District.
“Louisiana has lost more than 7,300 people to COVID-19 since March, and each one of them leaves a tremendous hole in our state. I have ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on the day of Congressman-elect Letlow’s funeral.”
Politico reported that the entire Louisiana delegation, led by House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, issued a joint statement offering their condolences. The statement said: “Luke had such a positive spirit, and a tremendously bright future ahead of him. He was looking forward to serving the people of Louisiana in Congress, and we were excited to welcome him to our delegation where he was ready to make an even greater impact on our state and our Nation.
“More than anything, Luke was a loving husband, father, brother, and son, and his family — like so many others who have been affected by this evil disease — needs our prayers.”

Luke Letlow died from complications related to Covid-19 at the age of 41. He was admitted to a hospital in Monroe on 19 December after testing positive for Covid-19. He was later transferred to a hospital in Shreveport and placed in intensive care. Dr. GE Ghali of LSU Health Shreveport said in a statement that Letlow had no underlying health conditions that would have put him at greater risk of Covid complications.
