Luke Knox was a college football player and brother of Buffalo Bills’ Dawson Knox. Knox, who was a standout at Brentwood Academy near Nashville, transferred to FIU in the offseason after playing with the University of Mississippi from 2018-2021. Knox started two games at linebacker for Ole Miss in 2019. He played mostly special teams the past two seasons and had 11 tackles, two for loss, in 2021.

Knox signed with the Rebels before the 2018 season, joining the team for which his older brother Dawson Knox started at tight end. After redshirting in 2018, Knox emerged as a contributor at linebacker in 2019, making 10 tackles with two tackles for loss and two pass breakups.

After Rebels coach Lane Kiffin was hired in 2020, Knox bounced between linebacker and tight end and was ultimately relegated to a reserve role in 2021. He transferred to FIU to be coached by Mike MacIntyre, who was the Rebels’ defensive coordinator in 2019.

Florida International University football player Luke Knox died on August 17, 2022, at the age of 22, the school announced.

“We are saddened by the sudden passing of Luke Knox, a member of the FIU Football program,” the university’s athletics department wrote on Twitter. “We send our thoughts and prayers to Luke’s family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”

FIU coach Mike MacIntyre, who previously coached Knox at the University of Mississippi, paid tribute to the student-athlete on Twitter, writing: “Words cannot express the heartfelt sorrow we feel because of the passing of our teammate and friend, Luke Knox. I had the honor of coaching Luke at Ole Miss and at FIU. While I admired his passion for football, his genuine love for his family and teammates is what I will always remember. He had a special way of making everyone around him feel comfortable and confident.

Luke’s family is special to me, and they will continually be in my heart and in my prayers during this difficult time. On behalf of the entire FIU football family, I extend sincere condolences to Luke’s family and all who love him.”

Buffalo Bills tweeted: “We’re heartbroken to hear of the sudden passing of Luke Knox. Sending all of our thoughts, prayers and support to Dawson Knox and the Knox family during this difficult time.”

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin also offered his condolences in a tweet: “I am very grateful for my personal relationship and time spent with Luke. He was a tremendous teammate and an even better person who lifted up everyone around him.”

Luke Knox Cause of Death

Knox’s cause of death was not revealed. Knox was unresponsive when found in his dorm room there by a teammate, police said. Police officers administered CPR upon arrival, and county rescue personnel took over when they came to transport Knox to a nearby hospital. Knox died in a Miami hospital. The university said police do not suspect foul play.
