Luce Douady was a French climber. She started climbing at a young age with her father in the Chartreuse Massif near her home. In 2019, Douady won the Youth World Championships title in bouldering in Arco, Italy, and also finished fifth in her debut appearance at the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Boulder World Cup circuit in Vail, US.

Luce Douady died on June 14, 2020, at the age of 16 after falling from a cliff in southeastern France. The French Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing (FFME) confirmed her death in a statement on its website. FFME said: “It is with immense sadness that the climbing community learned this Sunday of the death of one of their own. Luce Douady, 16 years old and young hope of French climbing, was the victim of an accident in a passage equipped with a handrail between two climbing sectors on a cliff near Crolles (Isère) during an outing with friends.
“Luce was a young athlete from the French climbing team, very promising. At only 16, the future was before her. This terrible news hit his training comrades, his coaches and his club, Chambéry Escalade hard. But today, the whole federation is in mourning. We obviously think of his family and we will be at his disposal.
“Brilliant in competition, 3rd at the European Difficulty Championship 2019, world champion of young boulders in 2019 at Arco and 5th at the end of her first stage of the World Cup of boulders in Vail that same year, Luce Douady was a in love with all facets of climbing, capable of major achievements in natural sites (8b + in 2020).”
The International Federation of Sport Climbing said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that the International Federation of Sport Climbing learned of the tragic loss of French climber Luce Douady, at the age of 16. Luce was a young, brilliant and talented athlete who won her first Youth World Championships title at last year’s competition in Arco (ITA), where she first placed 3rd in the Youth A Lead final, and then climbed atop the podium in the Youth A Bouldering event. Also in 2019, Luce made her first appearance in the IFSC Boulder World Cup circuit, debuting with a fantastic 5th place in Vail (USA), while finishing 20th at the 2019 IFSC Climbing World Championships in Hachioji (JPN) and participating in two Lead World Cup events in Chamonix (FRA) and Inzai (JPN). The IFSC’s thoughts and prayers are with Luce’s family and friends at this tragic time.”
