Lorna Breen died by suicide on Sunday, April 25, 2020, in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was 49. Her father, Dr. Philip C. Breen, confirmed her death to CNN. Breen had previously contracted the coronavirus while treating patients. She recovered and recently had gone back to work, but the hospital sent her home once again. Breen was staying with family in Virginia when she died.
The Columbia University Irving Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian hospital said in a statement: “Words cannot convey the sense of loss we feel today. Dr. Breen is a hero who brought the highest ideals of medicine to the challenging front lines of the emergency department. Our focus today is to provide support to her family, friends, and colleagues as they cope with this news during what is already an extraordinarily difficult time.”
JoAnne Tarantelli, Executive Director, New York American College of Emergency Physicians said, “We would often talk about her travel adventures and snowboarding vacations. She was a gentle soul with a kind heart and engaging personality. Lorna will be remembered for her dedication, devotion and contributions to emergency medicine. Loss is never easy and especially difficult when the loss is one of our own, part of our family. Lorna will be missed.”
