Linah Malatjie was a former teacher, activist, and Executive Mayor. She was the mayor of Emalahleni Local Municipality in the Nkangala District Municipality of Mpumalanga province, South Africa. Malatjie was elected as Honourable Executive Mayor of Emalahleni during a special council sitting in April 2018. She was a member of The African National Congress (ANC). On January 3, 2022, it was announced that Malatjie and her husband, Esau Malatjie had died after they were involved in a fatal road accident.

Prior to serving as the Emalahleni Local Municipality mayor, Malatjie was a site steward in the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu). She has also served as an education and gender convener for the greater Highveld Region. Malatjie was a professional teacher and she has as well served as a teacher and as a deputy principal.

After the accident, the victims were rushed to the hospital but unfortunately, Malatjie and her husband died in the hospital where they were receiving treatment. According to Sello Matshoga, The African National Congress (ANC) regional spokesperson, mayor Malatjie, and her husband, Esau collided with a speeding Ford Ranger Bakkie.

He said, “The mayor was in a private vehicle that collided with a Ford Ranger Bakkie. The Ford Ranger was allegedly driving at high speed and the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit them. It was a head-on collision, the driver of the Ford Ranger died on impact.” The ANC has mourned and paid tribute to the fallen ANC member, Matshoga said that her death is a blow to the ANC and in government in the province.

He added, “The ANC will remember her as a committed activist who served in our structures in various capacities. She belonged to a generation of post-apartheid activists who gave impetus to our struggle beyond the unbanning. A vociferous opponent of gender inequality and discrimination, throughout her activism Linah was in the forefront of the struggle towards the advancement of women emancipation and empowerment.”
