Linah Malatjie was a South African politician. Malatji had been the mayor of Emalahleni since 2018. She was re-elected as mayor of the municipality in Mpumalanga after the local government elections on 1 November 2021. A teacher by profession, Malatjie cut her political teeth in the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union and Congress of SA Trade Unions, and the ANC.

Emalahleni Mayor Linah Malatjie died in a car accident on Sunday 2 January 2022. Her husband, Essau Spetlela Malatjie, was also killed in the accident. Sello Matshoga from the ANC’s Nkangala region said the crash occurred at around 10.30 pm. The couple was driving between KwaMhlanga and Emalahleni when their car collided with a Ford Ranger bakkie, he said.

“With her incisive mind, sharp wit and easy humour, comrade Linah’s passing leaves a huge void in the ANC and in government,” Matshoga said in a statement. “She belonged to a generation of the post-apartheid activists who gave impetus to our struggle beyond the unbanning. A vociferous opponent of gender inequality and discrimination, throughout her activism comrade Linah was in the forefront of the struggle towards the advancement of women emancipation and empowerment.”

“Death has robbed the municipality, not just of a seasoned political leader but a caring mother to all the citizens of Emalahleni,” the municipality said in a statement via News24. “Her commitment, dedication and hands-on approach has earned her respect in both the public and private sector. Indeed we will dearly miss a mother, a peacemaker and a selfless, ethical and visionary leader who embraced everyone irrespective of your status.”

The SA Local Government Association (Salga) said Malatjie “made an indelible contribution not only to the communities she served but also to the local government sector at large”.

“Serving as a member of the Salga Mpumalanga provincial executive committee (PEC), Mayor Malatjie was an amazing and inspirational leader. Thanks to her rigour, professionalism and immense body of knowledge about local government affairs, which she generously shared, the organisation, municipality and the broader municipal government sector benefited considerably from this, and her passing is a profound loss.”
