Kristie Lu Stout is an American journalist and anchor. She is a news anchor and correspondent for CNN, based in Hong Kong, China. Stout reports from the newsroom and in the field on major breaking news stories including US-China tensions, the National Security Law, the coronavirus pandemic, the Hong Kong protests, the New Zealand terror attacks, North Korea’s advancing weapons tests, and the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan.
She also hosts feature programs for CNN, lecently presenting Tech For Good, a television and digital series comprised of intimate, inspiring, and transformative stories from every corner of the globe. Stout grew up in Cupertino, California, and graduated from Lynbrook High School in San Jose, California, where she was a founding member of the Lynbrook Speech and Debate Club and worked as a model in her teens.
She attended Stanford University, where she studied journalism she was writing for The Stanford Daily and KZSU. In the 1990s, she moved to China to learn Standard Chinese at Tsinghua University, freelance for the South China Morning Post, and worked at Sohu. In 1996, she started working as an editorial intern at Wired, and in 1997 she graduated with a master’s degree in media studies from Stanford.
