Karen Reuter, was a make-up artist on “Orange Is the New Black.”
According to Karen Reuter’s obituary, a graduate of Passaic Valley Regional High School (class of 1975), Karen became an accomplished Make-up Artist in the film and television industry. Her extensive career included working on many TV commercials and TV shows, including Saturday Night Live, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, The Sopranos, The Beautiful Life, Project Runway, The Big Gay Sketch Show, Rise, and Mercy. She was department head of the hit show Orange is the New Black, and was recently nominated for the Best contemporary Make-up in Television and New Media Series.
She credits her interest in Make-up from watching horror movies, which she enjoyed viewing with her grown children. Make-up Big screen credits include: The Greatest Showman, 28 Days, Step up 3D, Private Parts, and many others.
According to Karen Reuter’s IMDb page, she worked on “OITNB” for the Netflix’s show’s first three seasons. After that, Reuter assumed the role of make-up department head on the show.
In 1998, Reuter was listed as one of the co-authors of the book, “Read My Lips: A Cultural History of Lipstick.” It is noted in the book that there is an ancient Egyptian papyrus that shows a woman applying lipstick.
In 2015, Reuter was nominated, alongside Michal Biggar, for the TV and New Media Series Contemporary Make-Up award by the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards.

Reuter died on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at her home in South Orange, New Jersey, with her loving husband and children by her side. She was 62.
Following her death, a number of OITNB stars paid their tributes to Reuter. Kate Mulgrew, who plays the role of Galina “Red” Reznikov on the show, paid tribute to Reuter on Twitter in February 2019.
Mulgrew wrote: “My makeup artist on OITNB, Karen Reuter, passed away last week. Farewell to a warm-eyed woman wearing low-slung dungarees and a wry smile at 6am, whose work ethic was surpassed only by her bravery, which she revealed through laughter, kindness, and a turning away from self.”
