Justin Narayan is a youth pastor and the winner of MasterChef Australia 2021. He started cooking aged 13 and loves being inspired by the produce at hand to create memorable meals. He has always loved witnessing how his food can make people feel, often cooking for his fiancée Esther.
He travelled to India in 2017 and fell in love with its culture, history, people and of course, its food. While Justin’s skills are versatile in the kitchen, he has a strong understanding of Indian flavours and will gravitate towards savoury over sweet. Justin would love to one day have a food truck or restaurant featuring the Indian flavours he grew up eating, where some profits would go to helping feed and educate children living in the slums of India. On 13 July 2021, Indian-origin youth pastor Justin Narayan won the title of Masterchef Australia 2021 and walked away with $250,000 in prize money, beating the other finalists Kishwar Chowdhury and Pete Campbell. He was just three points behind frontrunner Pete after the grand finale’s first two rounds. Heading into the third and final round, Justin, Pete and Kishwar had to face a massive pressure test. Peter Gilmore, the Executive Chef of Bennelong and Quay, revealed two dishes the finalists had to recreate, his Squid Noodles and his Golden Crackle. Narayan bagged a perfect score of 40/40 for the first dish, beating the other contestants to win the finale.
Narayan said: “I am just as surprised as you are right now! This has been the experience of a lifetime. I feel very honoured and humbled to hold this trophy, and I’m the first to admit that I didn’t get here on my own. I owe a lot to God, the crew, the judges, my fellow contestants, my friends, my family and my fiancé. I’m not going to lie, I feel pretty blessed! I am keen to keep working hard and cooking up some good times, but for now, I’m going to enjoy this moment.”
Narayan took to Instagram to celebrate his victory, writing: “Find people that believe in you. Back yourself. Go hard and hopefully you’ll surprise yourself! Whoever’s reading this I love you.”
