R Lee Smith is a Circuit Judge for the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in St. Johns County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott on April 22, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. J. David Walsh. Judge Smith is currently assigned to the Civil Division at the Richard O. Watson Judicial Center in St. Augustine. He previously presided over the family law divisions in Flagler and Putnam counties.
Before becoming a judge, he worked as an Assistant State Attorney and the Chief of the Traffic Homicide Division for the Fourth Judicial Circuit. He also worked as an Assistant State Attorney for the Seventh Judicial Circuit and as legislative counsel in Washington, D.C. for Congressman Ander Crenshaw, according to his bio on the Seventh Judicial Circuit website.
Judge Smith graduated from Linganore High School in Frederick, Maryland. He received his bachelor’s degree from Florida State University in 1999 and his law degree from the Florida Coastal School of Law in 2002.
He began his legal career during law school as a legal clerk at Haynsworth, Baldwin, Johnson & Greaves in 2001. After graduating, he became Legislative Counsel for Congressman Ander Crenshaw of the United States House of Representatives. He served in that capacity until 2007, when he joined the Office of the State Attorney for the Seventh Judicial Circuit. The following year, he transferred to the Office of the State Attorney for the Fourth Judicial Circuit. He rose through the ranks during his tenure as an Assistant State Attorney, eventually becoming Division Chief of Traffic Homicide.
