Jon Karroll is a longtime television anchor with KRDO in Colorado Springs. He had worked in the media outlet for 25 years before his departure. He reported that he is leaving the news desk. He made the announcement on his Facebook page. Currently, he is a Development and Communications Manager for Special Kids Special Families since March 2019. Part of his television duties entailed emceeing various events, which, in a way, inspired his new career path.
“It was something I had been thinking about for a few years. I was happy with my TV career. I had done it a long, long time,” he said. “I started thinking about life after TV. I was wondering if there was something I could do in the community – use my face and name recognition and get with an organization and help them thrive and grow.”
“After 30+ years of radio and Television news I’m hanging up my microphone,” Karroll wrote on Facebook. “I’m NOT retiring.”He came to NewsChannel 13 in September of 1993 as the main evening news anchor and in that time have seen the station grow into a strong news presence in Southern Colorado.
In 2019, before he retired, he was a co-anchor “Good Morning Colorado” and NewsChannel 13 at Noon. He said that It was an exciting job, but the real thrill comes when we get a chance to cover breaking news, bringing our viewers news stories as they are actually happening. He certainly enjoyed many highlights in his broadcasting career. One of his’s greatest thrills was getting to meet and interview the late ABC news anchor Peter Jennings, not once, but two times! Mr. Jennings was always approachable and accommodating during our insightful interviews.
His passion for aviation has been fulfilled by several exciting airplane stories, most notably a flight aboard a world war two B-17 bomber from Denver to Colorado Springs. Producing special reports has taken him deep inside Cheyenne Mountain for an up-close look at NORAD and onboard a jet carrying federal prisoners for a series about the real “Con Air.”
