Jemel Roberson was an African-American armed security guard at a bar in suburban Chicago who was killed by police as he detained a suspected gunman.
Roberson worked as a gospel musician at several nearby churches, and also had found work at Manny’s Blue Room in Robbins, Illinois, where the shooting occurred.
Roberson was a 2010 graduate of Lane Tech High School where he played on the school’s basketball team. According to his family, he was in law school and served as a positive role model for his peers, inspiring young men to become involved with the church.
According to a witness, Adam Harris, who was at Manny’s Blue Bar in Robbins at the time of the incident on Sunday, Roberson was holding “somebody on the ground with his knee in his back, with his gun in his back” when officers from neighboring Midlothian got there early Sunday.
Soon after, an officer responding to the scene fired at Roberson — killing him. “Everybody was screaming out, ‘Security!’ He was a security guard,” Harris said. “And they still did their job, and saw a black man with a gun, and basically killed him.”
Accordding to a spokeswoman for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Roberson had a valid FOID card, but did not have a concealed-carry license.
Midlothian Police Chief Daniel Delaney said in a statement that officers from his department and the Robbins Police Department responding to a shooting found multiple victims inside the bar.
The statement said the “Midlothian officer encountered a subject with a gun” and shot him.
In Minnesota in 2016, Philando Castile was killed by an officer during a traffic stop seconds after he told an officer there was a weapon in the car.
