Jay Jay Phillips was a heavy metal musician who appeared twice on America’s Got Talent on season 4 in 2009 and season 12 in 2017. In 2009 and 2010, Phillips competed in the Tri-C High School Rock Off with his metal band, Hysteria, from Riverside High School. He was the keyboardist of the band. At the time of his death, he was a keyboardist for the rock band Metal Maffia. Based in the Cleveland/Youngstown area, his band Mettal Maffia has released five albums as a hybrid metal group.
According to his last Instagram post on Oct. 13, the rock musician was looking forward to making and playing music with his band in the coming months. According to TMZ, Phillips was battling COVID-19 during Thanksgiving week at home and took a turn for the worse the day before the holiday, and was found dead in his home on Thanksgiving by his girlfriend and her mother.
His band Mettal Maffia announced Phillips’ death on Nov. 30 via Instagram. The rock group shared a photo of Phillips with angel wings and a halo, playing his electric keyboard. Mettal Maffia wrote in a statement posted to social media:
“It is with great sadness we inform you all of the loss of our bandmate/brother/and friend @jayjayrocks. It still doesn’t feel real and we would give anything to change it. Please respect the family, as well as our wishes as we take our time to grieve and process this detrimental loss.

On Monday, November 29, 2021, Phillips’ bandmate Lauryn Von Taylor paid tribute to the late musician by sharing a throwback photo from Halloween 2020, writing, “@jayjayrocks it’s only been a few days since you were taken from us and it’s so painful. We miss you. Your jokes, your origami, your laugh..it all hurts. Keep on shining. Rest In Power 💚”
