Jamie Tarses (born Sara James Tarses) was an American television producer and television studio executive. She was the president of ABC Entertainment from 1996 to 1999. She was instrumental in developing such iconic shows as NBC’s Friends and Frasier. As a TV producer, she found success in such popular shows as ABC’s Happy Endings, TBS’ My Boys, TNT’s Franklin & Bash and Amazon Prime Video’s The Wilds.

Tarses graduated in 1985 from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts with a degree in theater. After graduating, she became an assistant to the talent executive on the 1985–1986 season of Saturday Night Live. She then worked as a casting director for Lorimar Productions.

In September 1987, Tarses was hired by NBC Productions’ Brandon Tartikoff as Manager, Creative Affairs. In December 1987, she moved to the network as manager of current comedy programming, overseeing such series as Cheers and A Different World. By July 1988, Tarses had switched to development as manager of comedy development and was upped to director of comedy development within seven months. She was involved in the development of such hit series as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Wings and Blossom. In 1994, Tarses was promoted to SVP Primetime Series and No. 2 to NBC’s entertainment president — and Tarses’ mentor — Warren Littlefield. She played a major role in the development of such signature NBC comedies as Friends, for which she gets a lot of credit; Frasier; NewsRadio; and Mad About You. She left NBC in 1996.

In June 1996, at just age 32, Tarses became the first woman to be named entertainment president at a major network when she took the role at ABC. During her time with ABC, Tarses saw success with projects including Dharma & Greg, Sports Night and The Practice. She ultimately resigned in August 1999.

After leaving ABC, Tarses worked on several other series over the years, including Happy Endings and most recently Amazon’s The Wilds. A Disney+ series, The Mysterious Benedict Society, which Tarses worked on as an executive producer is expected to premiere later this year.

WME, the agency that represented Tarses, said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our longtime friend and client. Jamie was a pioneer in every sense, breaking the glass ceiling of the television industry, and embodying the passion and tenacity that made her someone who was always ahead of her time. She unabashedly loved television and was an executive who made writers feel safe and heard. We will miss her greatly.”

Creator David Caspe said: “Jamie Tarses is a legend. To say she changed my life is a ridiculous understatement. She sold my first show which introduced me to my wife. And then sold a show about me proposing to her. Which we shot while my wife was pregnant with my first child. But my life was only one of literal thousands that she changed and touched forever. She is a trailblazer, an icon, a champion of writers, new voices, stylish, generous and kind. So, so kind. But as good as she was at anything, she was an even better friend, mother and person. Tarses is survived by her partner Paddy Aubrey and their two children, Wyatt and Sloane, as well as her parents, Rachel and Jay, siblings Mallory and Matt, sister-in-law Katie Tarses, three nieces, and a nephew, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
