Imane Khelif Biography – Imane Khelif Wiki
Imane Khelif is an Algerian boxer. She began boxing in Tiaret, Algeria. At 19, Khelif debuted on the world amateur stage and finished 17th at the 2018 World Championships in New Delhi. She then represented Algeria at the 2019 Women’s World Championships in Russia, where she came 33rd. She competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she was beaten 5-0 in a quarter-final by Ireland’s eventual gold medal winner Kellie Harrington in the lightweight division.
Khelif won a silver at the 2022 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, where she was defeated by Ireland’s Amy Broadhurst in the light-welterweight division. Khelif won gold medals in the 2022 African Championships, Mediterranean Games and 2023 Arab Games.
On 24 March 2023, Khelif was disqualified from the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, India, as a result of her failure to meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the women’s competition. She was found to have competitive advantages over other female competitors.
Paris Olympics
Imane Khelif sparked a boxing gender controversy at the Paris Olympic Games 2024 following a disqualification from the 2023 world championships for elevated testosterone levels. The Algerian boxer caused Italy’s Angela Carini to quit just 46 seconds into their preliminary match on Thursday 1 August 2024, after the Algerian landed one significant punch.
Khelif’s Olympics entry has become a hot story after she was disqualified at the 2023 World Championships “after her elevated levels of testosterone failed to meet the eligibility criteria,” according to the International Olympics Committee (IOC) database.
An IOC spokesperson previously said Khelif is eligible for the Olympics as her passport says that she is a woman. “Everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. “They are women in their passports and it’s stated that this is the case, that they are female.”
“All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competition’s eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations,” the International Olympic Committee said in a statement.

Getting into boxing meant travelling for training each week to the next village, 10 kilometres away, which also meant money for bus fare. She was unable to ask her father who, besides being away working in the Sahara desert as a welder, did not approve of boxing for girls. To raise money for transport, Imane sold scrap metal for recycling and her mother sold couscous. Together they were able to afford the bus to the town for Imane to have regular boxing training sessions.
“Both my parents come to support me. They are my biggest fans,” she said in an interview with UNICEF.
