Ian Holm Cuthbert was an English actor. He was best known for his role as Bilbo Baggins in the “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy: “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001),” “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003),” “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)” and “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014).” He was also known for his roles as Ash “Alien” in 1979 and Sam Mussabini “Chariots of Fire” in 1981.

His role in “Chariots of Fire” earned him a BAFTA Film Award for best supporting artist, a Cannes Film Festival award, and an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. He also won a BAFTA award in 1969 for “The Bofors Gun” and received four other nominations from 1979 to 1996 for various projects. He was also nominated for two Emmy Awards, one for 1992’s “Performance” and one for 2000’s “The Last of the Blonde Bombshells.”
