Ian David Long was a former US Marine and the suspected gunman in the Thousand Oaks nightclub mass shooting in southern California.
According to Police, Ian David Long appeared to have shot randomly into the crowd at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, about 50km west of Los Angeles. The bar was hosting a college country music night and was packed with students and other patrons.
Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said on November 8, 2018 that Ian David Long was armed with a Glock 21, a .45-caliber handgun designed to hold 10 rounds plus one in the chamber. But Dean said the gun had an extended magazine that is illegal in California. After opening fire on the crowd, Long turned the gun on himself.
Ian David Long served in the Marines from August 2008 until March 2013. A machine gunner who attained the rank of corporal, he served about seven months in Afghanistan, from November 2010 to June 2011. His last duty station was at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said his department had several previous contacts with Long including a call to his home in April, when deputies found him acting irate and irrationally. There was concern that, given his status as a veteran, he might be suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Deputies called the crisis intervention team, and mental health specialist who met with Long. The specialist didn’t feel that Long qualified to be detained under 5150, the California law that allows for a 72-hour psychiatric evaluation if a person is deemed a danger to himself or others. Long was left at the scene at that time. The other prior encounters were a traffic accident and an incident when he was the victim of battery at a bar in 2015.
Long was a former student at California State University, Northridge, and last attended in 2016.
