Helmut Jahn was a German-American architect, known for designs such as the Sony Center on the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany; the Messeturm in Frankfurt, Germany; the One Liberty Place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the Suvarnabhumi Airport, an international airport in Bangkok, Thailand. His recent projects included 50 West Street, a residential tower in New York City in 2016 and the ThyssenKrupp Test Tower in Rottweil, Germany in 2017. He was born in Zirndorf near Nuremberg, Germany, and grew up watching the reconstruction of the city, which had been largely destroyed by Allied bombing campaigns. He went to study at the Technical University of Munich from 1960 to 1965,and then he worked with Peter C. von Seidlein for a year. In 1966, he emigrated to Chicago to further study architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, but left school without earning his degree.

He was interested in yachting, and in the late 1990s owned at least three yachts named Flash Gordon . In 1995, Jahn’s Flash Gordon 2 won the annual Chicago to Mackinac Race, the oldest freshwater yacht race in the world. In 1998, he invited his fellow Vietnam War veteran, George Henry, to race with him in the Waterbury Channel Open. In 1997, Flash Gordon 3 won the Admiral’s Cup. In 2017 Flash Gordon 6 team captured its third straight North American Championship.Jahn joined Charles Francis Murphy’s architecture firm, C. F. Murphy Associates, in 1967 and was appointed Executive Vice President and Director of Planning and Design of the firm in 1973. He took sole control in 1981, renaming the firm Murphy/Jahn ,even though Murphy had retired. Murphy died in 1985. Generally inspired by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, yet opposed to the doctrinal application of modernism by his followers, in 1978, Jahn became the eighth member of the Chicago Seven. He established his reputation in 1985 with the State of Illinois Center in Chicago which prompted him to be dubbed “Flash Gordon”. In addition to the main seat in Chicago, the company has offices in Berlin and Shanghai. On October 26, 2012, Helmut Jahn renamed Murphy/Jahn to simply JAHN.

He was involved in a collision with two vehicles Saturday, according to Cameron Hills Police Department in Illinois, and was pronounced dead at the scene.Jahn was riding his bicycle northeast on Old Lafox Road, approaching its T-shaped intersection with Burlington Road, about 3:30 p.m. Saturday “and failed to stop at the posted stop sign,” according to a news release from Campton Hills police, a village near St. Charles in west suburban Kane County.
“That’s what multiple witnesses relayed,” Campton Hills Officer Scott Coryell said. “For an unknown reason, he failed to stop.”

A silver Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV headed southeast on Burlington Road struck Jahn, according to the statement from Steven Millar, Campton Hills police chief.A second vehicle, a silver Hyundai Sonata headed northwest on Burlington Road, then struck him as well, the statement said. “He was hit by the Trailblazer going south(east) and ended up in the north(west) lane where the Sonata hit him,” Coryell said by phone Sunday morning.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot was among the chorus who offered their condolences to Jahn’s family. “Jahn was one of the most inventive Chicago architects whose impact on the city — from the skyline to the O’Hare tunnel — will never be forgotten,” she wrote on Twitter.

The Illinois chapter of the American Institute of Architects, or AIA, said on Twitter: “Our AIA community was hit hard over the weekend with the tragic death of one of our longtime, famed members, Helmet Jahn. We are deeply saddened at the loss of one of Chicago’s true talents and thinking of his family and friends during this difficult time.
