Hannah Cornelius was a Stellenbosch University student who was raped, stabbed and then strangled to death in a brutal carjacking in South Africa’s Western Cape province.
Hannah Cornelius was with Cheslin Marsh, a friend in her car when they were hijacked by four men on May 27, 2017 in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Marsh was forced into the boot of the car and Hannah was put in the back seat and the attackers drove them 11 miles to the Kraaifontein suburb of Cape Town. Once in Kraaifontein, Marsh was allegedly pelted with bricks but managed to escape over a wall. He was found by resident Averal Fortuin. He suffered head injuries and a broken arm. Cornelius was then driven to a bush near a paintball range in Bottelary Road, where she was raped. From there, she was taken to an area near the Groenhof Farm in Stellenbosch, where she was stabbed twice in the neck. She also sustained severe blunt force trauma to her head and body.
The suspects in connection with Hannah’s murder are Vernon Witbooi, Geraldo Parsons, Eben van Niekerk and Nashville Julius, who face a string of charges, including murder, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and rape.
Vernon Witbooi, Geraldo Parsons and Eben van Niekerk were found guilty of robbing‚ kidnapping‚ raping and murdering Stellenbosch student Hannah Cornelius by Judge Rosheni Allie on November 7 2018 in the Cape Town High Court.
The three were also found guilty of the attempted murder of her friend‚ Cheslin Marsh‚ and of robbing and kidnapping of Miemie October and Ncumisa Qwina.
The fourth accused‚ Nashville Julius‚ was found guilty of robbery and of kidnapping Marsh and Cornelius.
She attended Reddam House high school in Cape Town, South Africa. She matriculated with six distinctions and had attained an average of above 85%. She was also involved in drama. After high school, she went on to Stellenbosch University where she studied BA humanities. She was in her second year at Stellenbosch University at the time of her death.

Cornelius’ blue VW Golf was spotted being driven from Mr Marsh’s block of flats at 3.40am, and the car next appears on another CCTV camera at a petrol station one hour later.
A figure can be seen in the front seat, believed to be Ms Cornelius, and if so, this would be the last time she was seen alive.
The CCTV also shows one of the four men accused of her rape and murder getting out of the car and walking into the petrol station to attempt to withdraw cash using Mr Marsh’s bank card.
