Flo Headlam Biography – Flo Headlam Wiki

Flo Headlam is a garden designer, TV presenter, horticulturist and one of the new TV Presenter on Garden Rescue Series 7 in 2022. She has been gardening professionally since July 2012. She first appeared as a TV Gardening Presenter for Gardeners’ World in 2017 and appeared on the programme until 2019 and was the Programmes first Black Presenter, according to Gardeners Unearthed.

Flo Headlam’s parents came from the Caribbean and gave her an early insight into gardening as they grew their own produce. She wrote on her Blog: “As a child we had a ‘growing culture’ in our household. My parents came from the Caribbean and grew up in the countryside growing their own produce. So they brought that habit with them to England. I remember vegetables, in particular, coming from the garden to the kitchen table. And as a child I liked to tinker and generally get involved in things, so I was in and out of everything.

“Another huge inspiration for me is my best friend who helped to kick-start my confidence to grow plants when I got my first garden. After that I was just flying! I like to be physically active, so once a client’s design has been approved, I’m eager to roll up my sleeves and get on with building the garden. It’s not an understatement to say I love digging. I find it very therapeutic. And it’s a fundamental part of the shape shifting that goes on as a garden develops.”

Flo received her B.A. degree in African Studies from the London School of Oriental and African Studies in 1994. She became a professional dancer and worked in the charity sector. After more than 20 years working in the charity section, Flo felt it was time for a change of direction. She studied general horticultural studies for two years and then completed a Diploma in Garden Design at Capel Manor College, Regents Park, London in 2017.

She was part of the presentation team for BBC Gardeners’ World 2017-19 and is currently part of the designer/presentation team for BBC’s Garden Rescue.

In April 2022, Flo was announced as one of the 4 equity ambassadors for The British Association of Landscape Industries to promote positive change and improve accessibility for everyone into the landscape industry.
