Faf de Klerk born François Faf de Klerk is a South African rugby player who is currently signed with Sale Sharks in Manchester until 2023. He played rugby as he attended Laerskool Bergland in Pretoria where the foundation for his rugby playing career was laid. Even at a young age, his persistence and fearlessness impressed his coaches as he excelled in the scrumhalf position.
He later attended Hoërskool Waterkloof high school in Pretoria where his love for rugby grew as he began evolving his trademark tenacious demeanor outperforming his peers and occasionally being switched between scrumhalf and flyhalf. It’s his time as a high school number 10 which gave him the confidence to kick a strong skill he uses on the field to control the game from the scrumhalf position.
He was included in the Lions squad for the 2014 Super Rugby season and made his debut in a 21–20 victory over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein. He then joined the Golden Lions Currie Cup team for the 2016 season. On 28 May 2016, De Klerk was included in a 31-man South Africa squad for their three-test match series against a touring Ireland team.
He joined English Premiership side Sale Sharks prior to the 2017–18 season on a three-year contract. In his first season with Sale Sharks, he was nominated for the Premiership player of the 2018 season.
He is a member of South Africa’s squad in the 2019 Rugby World Cup. In their 20 October quarter-final match against Japan, he was named the Player of the Match.
