Erik Cowie was a zookeeper, best known for appearing on the Netflix documentary series “Tiger King”. He was one of the zookeepers at the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma, formerly owned by Joe Exotic, whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage.
Despite working for Exotic for years, Cowie testified against his former boss for abusing and killing animals during the Tiger King star’s trial for violating federal regulations that protected exotic animals. Exotic was also convicted of hiring someone to murder rival Carole Baskin in Florida. He’s currently serving a 22-year prison sentence.
Carole Baskin’s Big Cat Rescue was awarded control over GW Zoo in 2020 as part of the settlement in her long-standing lawsuit against Exotic. The animal rights activist sold the Oklahoma property and one of the provisions is that the land can’t be used as a zoo for 100 years. Lowe turned over all of the animals from Exotic’s zoo to the DOJ.
Many of the players in Tiger King have befallen hard times since the series was released on the streaming network, including Jeff Lowe and his wife Lauren, who had more than five dozen big cats seized by federal authorities from their Oklahoma zoo after they were accused of violating the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in May.
Cowie has previously admitted to having a drinking problem, stating that he was “at the end of [his] rope” with his drinking problems before finding Exotic. Earlier this year, Cowie got into a car accident in Oklahoma and was charged with a DUI. Although he pleaded guilty, he failed to show up to his hearing.

While the New York Police Department declined to identify the deceased man pending family notification, it gave EW the following statement: “On September 3, 2021, at 1730 hours, police responded to a 911 call of an unconscious male inside of 21 East 55 Street in the confines of the 67 Pct. Upon arrival, police discovered a 52-year-old male unconscious in the bedroom of the location. EMS was on the scene and pronounced the male deceased. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.”
In a statement released from prison, Joe Exotic suggests Cowie succumbed to drugs and alcohol addiction. He wrote via 7NEWS: “I did everything I could to help him and save him from himself and he turned on me for fame. And money. There are a couple of others headed down the same path. RIP Erik. I will be making a donation in his name to a drug and alcohol treatment centre.”
Tiger King Park paid tribute to Cowie on its official Instagram page. A statement posted said: “It comes with great sadness to say that a dear friend and hard working employee has passed away. Erik Cowie dedicated every waking moment caring for the animals at GWEAP & Tiger King Park. After the animals were ripped away by the Department of Justice, he sadly couldn’t take it anymore. He absolutely loved all the animals and would show up early to check on each and everyone. He had his Demons but the animals helped bring joy and happiness in his life.”
