Eric Holthaus is a meteorologist and climate journalist. He has worked as a climate scientist and journalist for 15 years mostly in the United States, the Caribbean, and East Africa. Holthaus founded a publication known as The Phoenix a publication devoted to radical change in the climate emergency on Substack. He previously was a columnist for The Correspondent, Grist, Slate, and The Wall Street Journal. Holthaus is well known for his focus and mentions on global climate change and environmental activism.
During his career as a climate journalist, Holthaus has advised many organizations and individuals on coping and adapting to weather changes. In 2013, Holthaus felt that his extensive air travel was contributing to the climate problem, Holthaus vowed to stop flying. Together with paleoecologist Jacquelyn Gill and journalist Andy Revkin of the New York Times they co-founded the podcast known as “Warm Regards”.
On June 30, 2020, he released his first book; The Future Earth, the book is about imagining a future where society has reversed the effects of climate change. He left The Correspondent in November 2020 and started The Phoenix, The Correspondent itself discontinued its publication on January 1, 2021. After the end of the publication, Holthaus promised that members will automatically receive a refund for the remainder of their membership in the first weeks of the new year. He currently lives in St Paul, Minnesota, United States.
