Edna Molewa Biography

Bomo Edith Edna Molewa was a South African politician and member of the African National Congress (ANC).

She served as a South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs from 31 October 2010 to 25 May 2014 when the Ministry was split and she was appointed Minister of Environmental Affairs. She served under that capacity to her death on 22 September 2018.

She was a teacher at Moloto and Makunyane secondary schools back in 1976 to 1981. She is one of the people who served the underground structures of the liberation movement between the period of 1976 and 1990.

She has been a member of the African National Congress Women’s League National Executive Council since 2003, Chairperson of the African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) in the North West Province, South Africa.

She was born 23 March 1957 in Bela-Bela, South Africa and died on 22 September 2018 at the age of 61 in a Pretoria hospital after a period of illness.

She was studying towards a Bachelor’s in Communications at the University of South Africa. She had done a Leadership course at Harvard Kennedy School of Government and held a Certificate of Economic Leadership Development Programme from Wharton Business School in United States of America.

Molewa was married to Francis Sethema until his died. They had four children. She was later married to Richard Molewa, a business consultant who has two kids from his previous marriage.

Edna Molewa Death

She passed away on 22 September 2018 in a Pretoria hospital after a period of illness.

“I offer my deepest condolences to the family of Minister Edna Molewa as well as to her colleagues in Cabinet and across all spheres of government who have had the privilege to work alongside an extraordinary leader of our people.

“This is a devastating loss to our nation and to the global community who owe a great debt of gratitude to the late Minister Molewa for her championship nationally and globally for the environmental integrity of a sustainable planet Earth that can be shared and enjoyed by all nations and all people, rich and poor.

“Minister Molewa has distinguished herself in many capacities and causes from her contribution to our liberation to fighting for equality of women in our society. We shall miss her greatly.”

Edna Molewa Cause of Death

The late Minister Edna Molewa’s cause of death was Legionnaires’ disease – an extremely acute form of pneumonia. The minister’s brother Fana Mmethi in a statement issued on behalf of her family said, “Our sister passed away yesterday, 22 September 2018 following complications of Legionnaires’ disease.”

The official funeral service for the late Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa will be held in Pretoria on Saturday, 6 October 2018. President Cyril Ramaphosa, his deputy David Mabuza, ministers, dignitaries and family members are expected to attend.
