Derek Harbinson is a potter and contestant on Series 6 of The Great Pottery Throwdown. Originally from Belfast, Derek trained as a journalist and spent many years as a magazine editor. He first worked with clay when he studied art in college and always had a love of pottery.

“Some years ago my wife bought me a pottery throwing course as a Christmas present, which re-ignited my love for it.”

Derek makes ceramics in his small studio in Kent, England. “The vast majority of my work is thrown on the wheel, either as single pieces such as bowls or vases or as multiple pieces that are then assembled. Each piece of pottery involves various processes that can’t be rushed. After the initial shape is thrown the clay then dries out a little before it can be trimmed and given its final shape. Then it’s time for the first firing that turns the clay into ceramic – at this point it’s structure has changed and it can no longer be turned back into soft clay. A second firing with a glaze covering makes the finished piece hard-wearing, beautiful (hopefully) and extremely long-lasting.”

He wrote: “I can FINALLY reveal that I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the contestants on series 6 of The Great Pottery Throwdown! You’ll have to watch to see what happens. It all starts on Sun Jan 8 at 7.45 on Channel Four. #potterythrowdown.”
