Clarence Ford is a South African radio personality. He was a radio presenter at Heart FM from October 1997 until December 2021. At Heart FM, he presented the weekday show “Lunch with Clarence Ford” from Monday to Friday at 12:00 – 15:00. On Sundays, he presented “I Heart Sundays with Clarence Ford” from 18:00 – 22:00.

In December 2021, radio veteran Clarence Ford was fired from Heart FM after being with the station for 24 years. He told IOL he was enroute to Heart’s studios in Green Point for his regular 12-3 pm lunchtime show on Monday, 20 December 2021, when he got a phone call from programme manager Vernon Nel informing him of his dismissal. The phone call came just 40 minutes before his show was scheduled to begin.

“I got a phone call to say there is a letter that I must read,” said Ford. “And the letter says my services are not required any longer.”

Ford immediately phoned the station manager Renee Redelinghuys for clarity. “I called her just to make sure I understood the content.” He said Redelinghuys told him his contract was terminated with immediate effect.

His dismissal emanates from his revelations in a Weekend Argus Sunday exclusive that bullying by a senior manager resulted in his decision to leave the station. He was meant to leave the station in February 2022.

“I’ve had some run-ins with management. And there was a particularly bad one in February where I had to draw the line,” Ford in the Weekend Argus Sunday exclusive. “I cannot be in a space where my values are compromised. The February experience related to an attempt to bully on a public platform. And I was on the receiving end of that attempt. And I don’t take to bullies very kindly.”

“And I met the bully halfway in a language only bullies understand. And I expected the response would be, let’s just call it an emotionally intelligent response. And that is exactly what has brought us to this particular time,” Ford continued.

“I demanded that they (management) rein in the bully and they refused to, or didn’t feel it necessary. I said I can’t respect this kind of behaviour. And if they’re going to remain silent, they would be complicit, and I couldn’t stay. And I made it clear given that scenario.”

Prior to joining Heart FM, he had stints at Goodhope FM from 2002 to August 2007 and at Highveld Stereo from March 1991 to March 1992 as an On-Air Personality doing radio presentation and production. He was a manager in FMCG [fast-moving consumer goods], and part of his responsibility was sales promotion. He would announce the specials and a customer literally suggested that he be part of a development and training course for aspirant radio announcers at the SABC. On completion of the course, he was told that he lacked the talent for the job. Fortunately, he was head-hunted for a retail position in Namibia. With his training in hand, the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation offered him a radio position in 1990. He worked as a radio presenter at Namibia Radio from 1 April 1990 to 1991.

Radio presenter Clarence Ford is married to Wendy de Klerk. Ford and his wife Wendy de Klerk tied the knot in a fairytale beach wedding at Tietiesbaai on Saturday 10th March 2018.

Ford took to Facebook to talk about the near-disaster, saying residents even provided his wife, Wendy de Klerk, with a wedding gown. He wrote: “So I tied the knot on Saturday 10th March. The day was not short of drama, in fact it was nothing short of surreal. The wedding party’s dresses went up in flames, three and a half hours before the wedding was scheduled… as the guesthouse they were staying in, took flame.

“The people of Paternoster rallied around the deeply distressed women and girls and got them kitted out in other wedding clothes, including a bridal dress. My wife’s passport was lost in the fire and our honeymoon to Victoria Falls was also lost in the process. I am amazed, humbled and grateful for the generosity of spirit showed by the people of Paternoster. They enabled a beautiful wedding. God is Good and my wife is strong…. what more can a man ask for?”

Clarence and Wendy began dating in 2013 and got engaged in 2016. Wendy is a sales and marketing manager. Ford and his wife, Wendy de Klerk, have an age difference of 10 years.
