Chris Evangelou Biography – Chris Evangelou Wiki

Chris Evangelou is a British actor and former professional boxer who competed from 2009 to 2016.

Evangelou initiated his boxing journey at the Haringey Boxing Gym in Tottenham at the age of 17, guided by coach Chris Hall. Within six months of training, he participated in his inaugural amateur fight. Opting to pursue boxing as a career by the age of 18, Evangelou achieved notable success as an amateur, securing five international gold medals and becoming a national champion in the under-20 category in 2006.

Despite his achievements, he faced a setback in his bid to represent Cyprus at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, losing his last qualifying match. Transitioning to the professional realm at 23, Evangelou embarked on his pro career after completing 40 amateur fights with an impressive record of 35 wins.

Upon entering the professional boxing arena, Evangelou received offers from various boxing gyms. He visited the Wildcard Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, California, where he had the opportunity to meet renowned trainers Freddie Roach and Jesse Reid.

Despite being offered a contract after a sparring session, Evangelou declined, expressing his desire to stay in the UK, close to his family and fans. Eventually, Evangelou decided to sign with Matchroom Promotions, affiliated with the Barry Hearn sporting group.

Evangelou faced his first defeat on September 8, 2012, against Danny Connor in a ten-round competition at London’s Alexandra Palace. The decision was controversial, as many boxing pundits and professionals believed Evangelou had won.

In July 2011, he set a goal to compete for an English title by the year’s end. In a March 2012 interview with World Boxing News, he expressed his desire to fight Darren Hamilton for the Southern Area Belt to secure a spot among Britain’s top 10 fighters.

A rematch with Danny Connor ended with a 97–93 victory for Connor, who knocked Evangelou down twice in the 7th round. On November 30, 2013, Evangelou suffered another loss, this time on points (56–59) to Ashley Mayall, marking his third consecutive defeat.

In 2014, Evangelou secured victories in both of his bouts, with a points win (40–37) over journeyman Dan Carr and a first-round knockout of Mick Mills.

Scheduled to face Zoran Cvek on September 27, 2014, for the International Masters Welterweight Title, Evangelou continued his boxing journey. Managed by his father, Costakis Evangelou, who handles publicity and sponsorship, Evangelou’s older brother, Andreas “The Ace” Evangelou, also contributes to the family’s boxing legacy, remaining undefeated in the light heavyweight division.

Evangelou made a significant career shift, retiring from boxing to pursue acting. His foray into the world of acting included a notable role in the Guy Ritchie film “The Gentlemen,” where he portrayed a boxer/hitman named “Primetime.”

In 2020, Evangelou took a step further by releasing a short film titled “Shadow Boxer,” addressing the crucial issue of mental health within the boxing community. The short film was submitted to the film festival circuit for wider recognition.

In 2023, Evangelou embarked on a new acting endeavor, taking on the role of Troy in the popular television series “EastEnders.” Other Eastenders cast include Samantha Seager, Peter Caulfield, Fabrizio Santino, and Jonny Freeman.
