Astrid Martinez is a News Correspondent for Black News Channel (BNC) based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She joined BNC in January 2021. She was previously a reporter and host of “Astrid in ATL” on CBS46. Martinez joined WGCL/CBS46 in April 2016 and did plenty of stories on everything Atlanta has to offer, from movies being filmed in the city to arts, food, music, entertainment, and culture. She interviewed celebrities such as Eva Longoria, Oprah Winfrey, Robert De Niro, and the late John Lewis.

Prior to joining CBS46, Martinez was a reporter at the NBC station (KXAS) in Dallas, TX. Before reporting in Dallas, she worked three years at WBTV, the CBS affiliate in Charlotte, NC where she was a reporter and fill-in anchor. Prior to landing in Charlotte, Astrid was the anchor for the KGBT 5 p.m. newscast and Spanish language 8 pm newscast in South Texas.

While working along the Texas-Mexico border Astrid tackled topics ranging from immigration, homeland security, drug cartels, violence along the border, and human trafficking. She also covered several national stories including the Democratic National Convention in 2012 and the murder of ICE Agent Jaime Zapata in Mexico.

The former Miss Colombia USA 2000, began her broadcast growing up in Medellin, Colombia. Astrid saw first-hand the civil and political unrest that plagued her country. It was this type of upheaval and the people’s lives it affected that first ignited her passion for storytelling and a career in journalism. After moving to the United States, Astrid and her family settled in New Jersey, where she graduated with top honors from Montclair State University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a concentration in Latin American Studies.

She is a three-time Emmy Award-winning journalist. She was recognized as one of the 50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia by the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The luncheon took place inside SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia. As the host of Astrid in ATL, she focused on culture and the booming movie and music industry in the city. Her passion for storytelling began in her native country of Colombia.

Despite her busy schedule, she is actively engaged in community efforts and regularly gives back such as with the Bravos de Atlanta wherein former player Eddie Perez and she talked to some youth in early August; with the EME Women’s Advisory Board which seeks to encourage Latina women to educate, mentor, elevate, and empower other Latina women; mentoring youth and; so much more. She also sponsored a child, in Columbia, through an online program so that she could attend school. She also finds time for self-care as she regularly works out.

My last day on air will be this Wednesday [Dec 23, 2020]. Thank you to our viewers and to CBS46 for this incredible journey which is propelling me to my next step.”

In a text to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Martinez said she requested to expand her skill set by doing fill-in anchoring. They turned her down, saying she was great at live reporting.

She said: “I’m seeing newer employees get these opportunities. It’s a bit disheartening because I’ve done a great job building visibility for our station in the Latino community and accomplished so much in just 5 years.” She felt the renewal offer “didn’t reflect this and gave me no opportunity for personal or professional growth.”

She also said the new contract the station offered would have required her to go solo more often without a camera person with annual raises capped at 2 percent.
