April Ryan full name April Danielle Ryan, is an American journalist and author. She is White House reporter for American Urban Radio Networks and a CNN political analyst. She was born on September 5, 1967 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.
Ryan is a Morgan State University graduate with a B.S. in broadcast journalism. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from her alma mater in 2017. She also holds an honorary doctorate from Claflin University.
Ryan has been a member of the White House press corps for American Urban Radio Networks since January 1997. Prior to working for the White House press corps, she worked for various radio stations, including North Carolina A&T University and WXYV-FM in Baltimore, Maryland, where she served as their news director.
Ryan appears as a political analyst on television programs such as Hardball with Chris Matthews, and The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Real Time with Bill Maher among others.
She has been featured in Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Elle magazines, The New York Times, and The Washington Post among others.
Ryan has served on the board of the prestigious White House Correspondents’ Association and is one of only three African Americans in the Association’s over 100-year history to serve on its board.
She is also an esteemed member of the National Press Club. Ryan is the 2017 National Association of Black Journalists’ Journalist of the Year and a Terker Fellow with the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs.
She is the author of two books: the award-winning The Presidency in Black and White: My UpClose View of Four Presidents and Race in America, and her second book, At Mama’s Knee: Mothers and Race in Black and White.
