Ans Boersma is a Dutch journalist and anthropologist. She was arrested in 2019 by the Turkish authorities as a correspondent for Het Financieele Dagblad and expelled from the country. Between 2008 and 2011, she studied journalism at the Christelijke Hogeschool Ede. At this time she was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and she did an internship at Het Antilliaans Dagblad and Free Press Unlimited, among others. Between 2011 and 2013 she undertook the Master Social and Culture Anthropology at the VU University and taught at the Christelijke Hogeschool. In addition, she carried out journalistic assignments on a freelance basis and won the Future Prize with the news app Novinity during the 2011 De Tegel presentation.
In 2017, Boersma left the Christelijke Hogeschool, where she taught for five years at the time and laid the foundation for her journalistic career. She began working for Het Financieele Dagblad as a correspondent in Istanbul, Turkey. In his own words, this was a dream come true for Boersma. On January 16, 2019, Boersma was arrested in Istanbul at the office of the Immigration Service. Here she would have an appointment for an extension of her residence permit after receiving her 2019 press card shortly before. On the morning of Thursday, January 17, Boersma was put on a plane to the Netherlands, less than 24 hours after her arrest. The deportation was decided after Dutch police gave information to the Turkish authorities, the Public Prosecution Service allegedly suspected Boersma of links with Syrian terror organization Jabhat al-Nusra. According to several media, Boersma indicated that this suspicion might exist because of her Syrian ex-partner who was arrested in De Balie in 2018 on suspicion of terrorism.
In the TV program Nieuwsuur it was told on 17 January that Boersma is suspected of forgery of her ex-boyfriend’s visa application in 2014. She stated that she was only involved in guaranteeing a tourist visa in 2014, which was rejected. But she says she never helped anyone illegally to Europe. In 2019 it became known that Boersma had filed a lawsuit against the State of the Netherlands for the emotional and material damage she suffered. Boersma was awarded undisclosed damages.
