Unathi Nkayi also known as Unathi Msengana is a South African singer, actress, and radio personality best known for hosting shows on youth station YFM and Metro Fm’s drivetime show, with Glen Lewis. She is best known to television viewers as a judge on the Mzansi Magic reality competition series Idols, replacing Mara Louw in 2011. She was also the co-host (with Rowan Cloete) of the third season of the reality competition Popstars, in 2004.
Over the years she has collected a string of accolades. In 2003, she walked away with two awards at the Metro FM Music Awards, for Song of The Year and Best Dressed Artist. In 2004 and 2005 she was named as one of the Top Ten people in Media by The Star newspaper and was named as the most promising woman in media at the MTN Media Awards. She has also been nominated twice at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs). Her most recent accolades were being voted as South Africa’s Best Female at the Metro FM Music Awards and nominated for Best Urban Pop Album at the SAMAs.
She was the subject of an episode of the Nicky Greenwall-hosted documentary series The Close-Up, which aired on e.tv and the eNews Channel in 2012. She had her high school education at Victoria Girls High school and attended Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa, where she studied Journalism and drama. She was also a student at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands where she studied International Media Studies.
