Suu Khin Biography – Suu Khin Wiki

Suu Khin (born Suu M. Khin) is a Burmese food blogger in Houston, Texas, and a contestant on the 11th season of FOX’s “MasterChef: Legends.” She is also a Recipe Developer, Food Stylist, and Photographer. She started cooking when she was 6 years old. She describes herself as a “Grandma-trained Home cook,” as her cooking journey began in her grandmother’s kitchen. Khin writes on her food blog:

“My cooking journey began in my grandmother’s kitchen. Every morning all the women of the house: my grandmother, my mother, my aunts and myself gathered in the kitchen, sharing different tasks to prepare and cook a meal fit for all the men of the household. Raised in a patriarchist home, I had a lot of resentment towards cooking, cleaning and other domestic chores being sole responsibilities of women. But as the youngest girl member of the family, I was frequently told to keep my voice and thoughts to myself…Today, I don’t cook anymore because I am a woman or it is a responsibility. Cooking is now a pride, purpose and pleasure.”

“On top of all the delicious and comforting food she lovingly made for the family, her kitchen was complete with stories and life lessons. My grandmother taught me to understand, since at a very young age, that food is much more than a meal and cooking is a way to spread kindness and portray generosity. To her, cooking with love is never overrated. Everyday in the kitchen, she led us by example to always have respect for the ingredients, gratitude for every hand that had helped us put food on the table and compassion for the people you are cooking for.”

She started her food blog, Burmalicious by Suu, while a business school student in Massachusetts at age 21: “The purpose of that food blog is to first celebrate my family culinary heritage and second is to promote and demystify Burmese cuisine, because it’s been overshadowed and underrepresented for so long and I think the world is missing out,” Khin told FOX 26’s Natalie Hee. “The first taste of a country and a culture is through a cuisine, and you reach people’s minds and their hearts to their stomach.”

The Masterchef: Legends contestant says: “Every dish I make has a personal anecdote tied to it – family, traditions, culture, ethnicity and history. I started ‘Burmalicious by Suu’ with an intention to preserve and honor the culinary heritage passed down in my family for generations. There is also a big hope of bringing depth to the definition of Burmese cuisine. All I want is to tell food stories in the most empathetic way, with a grateful and giving heart. My purpose will always be to celebrate cultural diversity and to bring people closer and share happiness through the culinary experiences I create.”

Suu Khin MasterChef: Legends

Suu Khin is competing on the 11th season of FOX’s “MasterChef: Legends.” In this season of ‘MasterChef: Legends,’ she’ll be bringing her family’s Burmese recipes to an international stage. This season of “MasterChef: Legends” premiered on Fox on June 2, 2021.

During the premiere episode of Masterchef: Legends, Suu presented her favorite dish from her childhood — Burmese Coconut Noodle with Shrimp — to judges Gordon Ramsey, Joe Bastianich, Aaron Sanchez, and Emeril Lagasse.

“It’s the best dish I tasted all night,” Gordon said, handing Suu a white apron to symbolize her passing the audition and entering the top 15 of the competition.

Suu ran out to her husband outside and called her parents. “Mom, Dad, I got a white apron. I earned it,” she burst out and cried.

Suu dedicated her TV debut in honor of her late grandmother who taught her how to cook growing up in the capital city of Yangon.

“The coconut soup is a recipe my grandma personally taught me so this is to celebrate her life and pay tribute to her wonderful 100 years of life,” Suu said.

As an avid activist, she’s also bringing awareness to the civil unrest happening in her home country, after the military seized control.

“Burmese people are going through a lot of struggles right now and that’s why their voices need to be heard more than ever. This might not be the answer to the problems that Burmese people are facing but you know, them knowing that the world is watching, that the world is listening and that people around the world care for them; that will really keep them going,” Suu said.
