Sohail Chowdhary is a Southampton entrepreneur, Martial Arts Instructor and candidate on The Apprentice 2023. He is the Founder of AG Martial Arts, a Family Friendly Martial Arts School in Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth.

Chowdhary, who was a pupil at Upper Shirley High and studied at the University of Southampton, set up his martial arts business in his native Southampton after losing his job with a leading accountancy firm. He said he wanted to return to “what I was passionate about”, having enjoyed martial arts as a child.

He recalled the first class he held in the Shirley area of Southampton.

“It was a very, very small hall, with a small budget, but next thing you know people came in their hundreds and it’s grown to about 600 members in Hampshire,” he said.

“We get a lot of people who have been bullied or have confidence issues – or even women going through domestic violence at home – we are the escape where people can come and enjoy themselves and we help them at the same time.

“We impact so many kids’ lives and I want to bring that the whole of the UK.”

He put his business acumen down to taking part in enterprise programmes at school at Upper Shirley High and Peter Symonds College in Winchester.

What is your USP?

My USP is systemisation and automation. That means, to put it simply, turning my laziness into a positive by creating smart solutions and simple shortcuts to difficult problems. I can achieve the same results as others in half the time.

What is your biggest weakness?

My biggest weakness would be sometimes not listening to others when on the very rare occasion I might be wrong. I’ll always be the person that looks out for the little guy and sometimes that means that I will put emotions before business. I will make sure that people are looked after, first and foremost, over anything else.

Why do you deserve Lord Sugar’s investment?

I was raised in a council house and I’m proud of that, but that means I’ve had to fight hard to achieve the comfortable life I lead today. I’ve got a proven track record behind me and if the previous five years are anything to go by, the next five are going to be something special. Plus, owning a martial arts business means Lord Sugar can learn how to kick ass for free.
