‘After we separated we were trying to figure out a way that we could both do this,’ Sharon told the RTÉ Guide. ‘My mother lives in Westmeath as does my sister, so at the time I just said, “I will go see this house.”
‘I thought, “Dublin is mental prices, nobody can afford to buy a house in Dublin… work with what you have,”‘ Sharon continued. ‘And the support system of course was the main reason.’

Sharon Tobin Children
Sharon Tobin has two children, Hannah and Tobin. She co-parents with her ex-husband Paul Dunne following their separation in 2017.
“I’m wondering about them at school and if there are other children there whose parents have separated,” she said in an interview with the RTÉ Guide. “I’d wonder if they are going to feel different, because the slightest thing will make you feel different when you’re a kid. But they just say, ‘Ah yes, there are others like us’, so I guess it’s just different now.”
Sharon Tobin Family
Sharon Tobin is the daughter of Tommy and Christine. Her father, Tommy, was killed in a hit and run, cycling home from work when Sharon was four years old. She never knew her dad, who hailed from rural Tipperary, so her image of him is a composite of other people’s memories and stories.
Her mother, Christine, was just 26 when she was widowed. With two young children, she had no choice but to carry on, but she would often tell her daughters how proud their dad would have been of them, especially in their moments of big, or even little, triumphs or achievements.
“I believe that was so important for Mum to do because it did make us feel like there was two of them,” Sharon told the RTE Guide. “As we got older, we tended to brush it off, saying ‘Stop being so sentimental’ or whatever and Mum rarely says it to us now.”
She has a sister, Laura. Her mother and sister live in Westmeath.
Sharon Tobin Salary
RTÉ journalist Sharon Tobin was offered the Six One News co-anchor position following the national broadcaster payment controversy in 2023.
“There wasn’t much scope for negotiation on terms or salary or whatever,” she said. “It was like, ‘This is what it is’ and if I didn’t take the job it could go elsewhere. The climate had changed, and it wasn’t the time to be saying ‘I want this or that or the other’. I thought ‘You’re in your 40s and this is an amazing opportunity so take it and go on from there.’”
In her first major interview since getting the job, Sharon Tobin denied being on a ‘whopper salary’.
She said: ‘I think when this whole thing with RTÉ started, a lot of us, particularly colleagues in the newsroom, were kind of saying: “Oh God, I’m so embarrassed going down to the school gates” because there are so many unanswered questions and people are looking at you thinking: “Are you one of the people earning hundreds of thousands?”
‘And you go: “No, I’m absolutely not. I work in the newsroom, we’re on grades – it’s very different.” We’re happy to see the questions answered. Sometimes it can feel like we’re working in two different organisations. We are captivated watching everything that goes on. It slightly depresses us because we realise the repercussions for us as RTÉ staff.’
The journalist is well accustomed to the spectre of pay cuts. ‘When I started we were asked to take pay cuts,’ she said.
