Sam Oji (born Samuel Udoka Oji) was an English professional footballer, who started his career as an Arsenal youth player. Oji grew up in the Arsenal academy before signing his first professional contract with Birmingham City in 2004.
London-born Oji played in the Football League for Doncaster Rovers, Bristol Rovers, Leyton Orient and Hereford United, and in the Swedish Superettan for Ljungskile SK, before knee injuries kept him out of football for two years. He resumed his career with Tamworth of the Conference Premier. He then played in the League of Ireland for Limerick and Galway United and in non-league football for Worcester City and Hednesford Town. He joined Highgate United in 2018, and was appointed assistant manager of that club in July 2021.

Sam Oji passed away at the age of 35 on 28 August 2021 following a short illness that was not related to Covid, according to Worcester News. His current club, non-league Highgate United FC, confirmed his death on Twitter. The club tweeted: “All it is with a very heavy heart that I am deeply saddened to inform you, that our beloved Captain, Leader and Legend Samuel Oji has sadly passed away. The thoughts of all at Highgate United FC are with Sam Oji’s wife, children and family at this very sad time. RIP Oji.”
On Friday 27 August 2021, the club moved to address rumours of Oji’s death confirming their captain was “extremely ill” but still fighting for his life before announcing his sad passing on Saturday morning.
Highgate United released the following statement on Friday night: “There has been various comments posted across social media throughout the day with regards the welfare of Samuel Oji. Sam is extremely ill but still fighting like the warrior that he is.
“We would like people to respect the privacy of his family and close friends at this very difficult time. The club will release further details in due course. Can we ask all to refrain from posting any further comments. Thank you.”
Following the news of Oji’s death, tributes have poured in for the footballer from around the world of football. Birmingham City FC tweeted: “The Club is devastated to hear of the passing of former player Sam Oji, aged 35. The thoughts of everyone at #BCFC are with Sam’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”
Former club Limerick FC wrote: “Tragic news this morning as former Limerick F.C player Samuel Oji has passed away. Signed under Stuart Taylor, Sam was an outstanding player and more importantly, an outstanding person. Sincere condolences from all at the club go to his family, friends and loved ones. RIP.”
Leyton Orient wrote on Twitter: “We’re deeply saddened to learn the news that former player Sam Oji has passed away. Our thought are with Sam’s nearest and dearest in this difficult time .Rest in peace, Sam.”
Former Aston Villa and England star Lee Hendrie, who played with Oji at Tamworth between 2012 and 2013, tweeted: “So sad to hear the news about the big man @SamuelOji_24. One of the nicest guys you meet on and off the pitch. Thinking of the family. Gone far to soon. R.I.P big man.”
Arsenal F.C. wrote in an Instagram post: “We are deeply saddened by the news that Samuel Oji has passed away. A graduate from our academy, he was loved by coaches and teammates alike. Our thoughts and condolences are with Samuel’s friends and family.”
