Roger Mayweather born Roger L. Mayweather was an American professional boxer and boxing trainer. He was a two-weight class champion. He held the WBA and lineal super-featherweight titles from 1983–84 and the WBC light welterweight title from 1987–89. He also held the IBO light welterweight title in 1994 and the IBO welterweight crown from 1994-1995.
Roger trained his nephew, world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., when he turned professional in 1996 for two years until Floyd Mayweather Sr. took over the head trainer role. He returned in 2000 and was his trainer until 2012.

Roger Mayweather died on March 17, 2020, at the age of 58, after a long battle with diabetes. Floyd’s camp confirmed to TMZ Sports. Mayweather Promotions also confirmed his death in a statement on Twitter. Mayweather Promotions tweeted: “We are saddened with the recent news of Roger Mayweather’s passing. Our hearts go out to the Mayweather family and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. We thank you all for the outpouring of love and support during this time. Roger’s spirit lives on with us forever.”

Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing. Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years and now he can finally rest in peace. Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world. It is a terrible loss for all of us. We are thankful for all the love and well-wishes we have already received as word traveled about Roger’s passing. It helps me to see that he was able to touch so many people through his life in boxing, because he gave so much to the sport, which was his first and longtime love.”

Roger Mayweather’s death is the second family tragedy to strike the Mayweather family in recent weeks. Floyd Mayweather’s ex-girlfriend and mother of his three children, Josie Harris, who was found dead in her car outside her California home on March 11, 2020.

In a 2015 interview, Floyd Mayweather spoke about Roger Mayweather’s declining health. He said, “My uncle Roger Mayweather has lost a lot of memory from the sport of boxing. It’s sad that he’s only in his 50’s but it seems like he’s an old man that’s in his 80’s.”
