Born in Burton upon Trent, Richard turned professional in 1996 and reached the final stage of the European Tour’s qualifying school in 1997 to gain his card on Europe’s second tier Challenge Tour for 1998. In 2001, he won the Challenge Tour Grand Final and gained a place on the European Tour for 2002.
In 2019, Richard also became the oldest player to graduate from the Challenge Tour at 46, 18 years after he won the Challenge Tour Grand Final in 2001.
