Paul Murphy was an Australian journalist. He is best known for ABC programs This Day Tonight, PM, AM and Nationwide, and SBS’s Dateline. Murphy first joined the ABC in the late 1960s and became a political reporter in the Canberra press gallery, before joining the ground-breaking ABC television current affairs show This Day Tonight. He was a founding member of Australia’s first nightly current affairs TV program, This Day Tonight, working with Bill Peach, June Heffernan, Tony Joyce, Peter Luck, and Mike Carlton. He moved on to the ABC Nationwide program before presenting PM for a decade until 1993.
Murphy was the founding presenter of the international current affairs program Dateline on SBS in 1984. He also contributed the “South Coast News” segment for many years to Triple J’s This Sporting Life program, based on the fictional activities of former sporting and show business celebrities on the New South Wales south coast.
In 1994, Murphy was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to public broadcasting and to journalism. In 2000, he was awarded the Walkley Award for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism.

Paul Murphy died in October 2020, at the age of 77. Mike Carlton confirmed his death on Twitter. Carlton tweeted: “Deeply saddened to report the death of Paul Murphy. ABC journalist, foreign correspondent, TDT reporter, presenter of PM. And an old mate. Of cancer, this afternoon. His many friends will miss his wit and wisdom, his warmth and humanity.”
The ABC’s news director, Gaven Morris, tweeted: “Very sad news today with the passing of Paul Murphy, legendary journalist and long-term presenter of ABC Radio’s PM program. His unforgettable voice, his passion for a good yarn and his dedication to broadcasting will be greatly missed by so many. Thank you Paul. Vale.”
RN Breakfast presenter Fran Kelly said on Twitter, “Paul Murphy was simply the best political interviewer we’ve ever had. I regarded him as a mentor and an inspiration in journalism. He was fearless, funny and principled. Vale Murph.”
