Olivia Newton-John was an English-Australian singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, and activist best know for her role as Sandy Olson in the 1978 film Grease, co-starring John Travolta. Her other acting credits include Xanadu, Two of a Kind, and A Mom for Christmas.

Olivia was born on 26 September 1948 in Cambridge, England to Irene and Brin Newton-John. Her family moved to Melbourne, Australia when she was 5. She started her performing career as a teenager, winning a talent content on Australian TV show Sing, Sing, Sing and forming an all-girl group, Sol 4, by the age of 15.

Her first single, “Til You Say You’ll Be Mine,” was released in 1966 on Decca Records. She toured European nightclubs with Pat Carroll as a duet act called Pat and Olivia until Carroll’s visa expired, forcing her to go back to Australia.

Newton-John stayed in Britain, recording and releasing her first solo album, “If Not for You,” in 1971, featuring the title track originally written by Bob Dylan and recorded by George Harrison. The song hit No. 1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart and No. 25 on the pop charts. Newton-John said she felt scared and overwhelmed at times, and that thinking of others who also were dealing with cancer kept her grounded.

“There are other people out there doing much, much worse than me,” Newton-John said. “I’m [a] very privileged person and I’m very aware of that. I mean, I live in this beautiful place, I have a wonderful husband, I have all the animals that I adore. I have an incredible career.”
